At GWP CEE, we are happy and proud to lead the D-CLEAN project, funded by the Interreg Danube Programme, together with a strong consortium of experts from across the Danube region. This three-year project aims to improve sustainable wastewater and stormwater management in the rural areas of the Danube Region, a topic more relevant than ever in light of the revised Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD) and the goals of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR).

D-CLEAN promotes Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) as a core part of the transition to greener, more resilient water infrastructure. These solutions are not just environmentally sound—they offer cost-effective, scalable approaches that benefit people and ecosystems alike. The project is especially relevant for the NBS Community of Practice, as it places NBS at the heart of planning, implementation, and policy innovation.

This three-year project aims to improve sustainable wastewater and stormwater management in the rural areas of the Danube Region, a topic more relevant than ever in light of the revised Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive!

Over the next three years, the D-CLEAN partnership will engage stakeholders, co-create solutions, test practices on the ground, and ultimately aim for a strategic shift in how the Danube region approaches wastewater and stormwater management. We are not only raising awareness—we are driving change.

And while our focus is the Danube Region, the lessons, tools, and innovations we generate will be valuable to communities and professionals around the world working toward similar goals.

We invite you to follow our activities, join our webinars, and engage with our outputs. Let’s shape a cleaner, more resilient future together.
