Please join the Water Integrity Network and Sanitation and Water for All for the latest Integrity Talk on Water Tariffs and Inflation!
The deterioration of the value of currencies around the world due to inflation has increased living costs substantially. A number of water and sanitation service providers have significantly raised tariffs in response to inflation. For example, residential water tariffs in Dhaka, Bangladesh, have increased by 164% between 2009 and 2021, according to local news sources.
As a result, people spend more pesos, dollars, euros, … to buy goods and services, including water and sanitation. Inflation affects different households in different ways, however. The urban poor already tend to spend a higher share of their income on water and sanitation than higher-income households.
How does this square with the human rights to water and sanitation and the principle of affordability? What can be done to mitigate the impact of inflation and secure affordable tariffs?
This talk explores different integrity measures implemented by utility companies, international banks, governments, and civil society organisations, to mitigate the impacts of inflation. Panellists and WIN partners will discuss the practical challenges of making water affordable and realising the human rights to water and sanitation, particularly for low-income groups.
