Description / Abstract

This report from the European Environment Agency outlines the broader role wastewater treatment can play in mitigating climate change and recovering resources. By applying a systemic approach to wastewater collection and treatment, a transition to a circular economy can be achieved, minimising pollution through the use of renewable resources provided by wastewater and its treatment. A number of approaches are needed to achieve this, including technology, investment in infrastructure, nature-based solutions, regulatory changes, and cultural acceptance.
